Non-Executive Board Member, Wales Probation Trust June 2010 to Sept
The new Wales Probation Trust came into existence on 1 April 2010 having unified the previous four independent Welsh regions. With a staff of 1200 and an annual budget of circa 55m it is the fourth largest Trust in the UK.
As a Board member, sitting on the Audit & Risk committee and the People Services committee; working with the Chairman, CEO and other Executives, developing strategy,, monitoring service delivery and performance, whilst ensuring value for money in taking forward the business of the Trust.
Group EHSQ & Risk Management Manager for ZincOx Resources plc Nov 2007 to Jun 2010
An international group of companies developing Mining, Zinc Processing and Zinc Recycling operations worldwide. Responsible for all aspects of EHSQ and Risk Management Globally reporting directly to the MD.
Supporting the Corporate Executive to facilitate openness, transparency and accountability to all stakeholders, whilst proactively driving effective operations globally. Responsibilities include the development of the company Risk Management programme; the building and implementation of a companywide, fully Integrated and Accredited EHS&Q Management System meeting the requirements of the standards IOS 9001, IS and OHSAS the development and implementation of the corporate EHS&Q strategy, encompassing: Policy, Protocols, Procedures, Communication, KPI’s, Auditing and Training. Other areas of responsibility include International Carbon Trading and the Corporate Sustainable Development agenda.
Key achievements:
Built a fully Integrated EHSQ Management System.
Gained formal accreditation to the standards ISO 9001, ISO and OHSAS
Developed significant Corporate EHSQ Protocols, Model Programmes, Guidelines, Procedures and Tools.
Designed and implemented the Corporate Risk Management Strategy.
Put in place substantial Protocols for Corporate Governance.
Built the EHSQ management system for the $220m Zinc Mine and Process plant in Yemen.
Trained and developed the EHS teams at the Yemen Mine project, the Belgian rubber grade plant, the BRZ refinery and the Ohio recycling projects in the USA.
Developed and delivered various training programmes to Corporate and site personnel.
Represented ZincOx on the IZA REACH Consortium, General Council.
European EHS Manager, Novelis (Switzerland based) Aug 2005 – Nov 07
Responsible for all aspects of EHS, covering 16 operational and 4 non operational facilities in 6 countries across Europe (some 6500 employees and revenues of $3.1billion).
Reporting functionally to the VP HR/EHS; representing Novelis Europe on the Novelis Inc EHS Council (the body that sets policy, identifies strategic direction and develops training / education programmes). The role provided strategic leadership and support to 20 facilities across Europe; ensuring best practice were shared, that appropriate systems were developed, communicated and maintained; whilst also facilitating compliance to EU Regulation, Country specific Legislation and Corporate Policy.
Key achievements:
Zero Fatalities (previously 2005-3, 2004-3).
Represented Novelis Europe on the Novelis Inc EHS General Council.
Initiated and implemented the WTT (Senior Management Walk The Talk) Programme in all European facilities.
Developed the Novelis Europe EHS STIP target programme.
Developed many EHS Performance Standards, guidelines and tools to facilitate continuous improvement in EHS performance.
Put in place a holiday communication strategy (stats indicated that accident trends worsened leading up to or just after a holiday period)
Conceived the Novelis Europe EHS Reward and Recognition programme.
Instigated Site Manager Letters of Representation.
Set up and Managed the European EOHS networks
Developed materials and delivered high level training sessions across Europe.
Represented Novelis Europe on the Eurometaux REACH General Council.
Presented on LOTO at the EAA (European Aluminium Association).

HR/EHS Services Manager, Novelis UK Ltd Mar 2005 – Aug 2005
From an EHS perspective, responsibilities included: gaining accreditation to OHSAS whilst maintaining ISO accreditation, IPPC licence and compliance to relevant regulatory controls; development of data management systems for Accident Incident recording, Hazard and Near Miss recording and a Risk Assessment data base. Full implementation of the site communication strategy, planned inspection regime, training and development programmes.
HR experiences covered TU negotiations, Major recruitment programme, Disciplinary and Tribunals, Restructuring, Payroll and setting up of a new company Pension Scheme.
EHS Training and Development, Alcan Rogerstone, UK May 2003 – Mar 2005
After major restructuring in light of threat of closure, the Rogerstone facility allowed its Environment, Health & Safety and Training managers to take early retirement. I accepted a temporary secondment to cover all three positions. Responsible for the implementation of Alcan’s new EHS business management system at Rogerstone. The system was very onerous with many Directives, Model Programmes and Guidelines spelling out Alcan’s key requirements, roles and responsibilities for achieving a series of “step” or major changes in EHS performance at all Alcan sites.

Alcan Europe developed and implemented an EHS audit programme with a brief to conduct periodic audits to ensure compliance with policy and legal criteria. Auditors were selected from line managers early in their careers who were seen to be actively involved with EHS issues.
