School Work Experience
Oxford University Museum (November 2002)
Various maintenance and preparation of displays.
This involved data sorting and display work for the public. My main task was to help prepare specimens which involved extracting and cleaning natural fossils. Later in 2003, I took a day to join a self-employed environmental biologist in order to gain an insight into a more active role in the field. This was enjoyable as there was a significant degree of responsibility involved.
B-Line Graphics (May 2000)
Various computer assisted design tasks.
Design work for professional letterheads, converting and printing logos to transfer to vehicles, and designing and printing different media for companies.
This expanded on my IT and design skills, which I also have a solid interest in.
Career History
Odeon Cinema (September 2008 - September 2009)
Position: Team Member and part time Cashier
General retail service and cleaning/stocking, including ID checks for age ratings and screen ushering while maintaining a friendly and approachable attitude to customers. The cashier position involved cash handling, totalling the day's takings in the treasury and preparing floats for tills. Basic administration and time management were key in this role.
Thames Valley Environmental Records Centre (TVERC) (July - August 2007)
Position: GIS Digital Biodiversity Habitat Mapping Officer
Electronic mapping of different wildlife habitats in Oxfordshire using MapInfo, which also involved applying classification skills to visual evidence and entering data on spreadsheets using Excel. I worked on my own initiative and the job required self planning and teamwork.
Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd (December 2002 - August 2004)
Position: Customer Services Assistant
This involved working at the checkouts and helping customers with enquiries and assistance. The position helped improve my social and communication skills, as well as basics in security procedures and cash handling. I later transferred to Sainsbury's petrol station where I was competent in petrol and forecourt safety, this involved a higher degree of responsibility.
Volunteer Work
Completed a 1 week conservation holiday for BTCV near Exmouth in summer 2003.
Worked at Thames Valley Environmental Records Centre for 2 weeks, and used IT skills inputting species data for the surrounding area (August 2006). Was later offered a position in 2007.
Obtained a newt handling license after assisting with a Great Crested Newt survey and subsequently attending a 2 day training course (June 2007).
Took a gap year in academic year of 2007/2008 to volunteer with several organisations, including:
BTCV - Step building, tree planting, post & wire fencing, scrub clearance
Groundwork - meadow management, use of power tools for bramble clearance, pond clearing, heath management and coppicing City Museum - documenting and cataloguing insect collections
Have been a Millennium Volunteer and have completed 474 hours of volunteer work for that same year, achieving the 100 and 200 hour certificates.
Volunteered in wildlife sanctuaries and animal rehabilitation for 2 months in South Africa. (2008)
Interests and Skills
I'm enthusiastic towards wildlife conservation, and recent years in education have helped confirm that I have a strong desire to follow a career based on environmental protection and conservation. I am also proficient in a number of IT skills; I have used computers for work assignments and previous jobs, and am enthusiastic with learning new programs and entering data. I have enjoyed working in an office environment, but I also enjoy the physical work involved with conservation, as it serves to increase fitness and I appreciate the difference to the environment it makes. From my paid jobs and volunteer work I have developed my skills in:
