SAMPLE I.: PLAN AND PHOTOS (1 YEAR AFTER CONSTRUCTION) OF A PRIVATE RESIDENTAL GARDEN
`LAVENDER SLOPE'
LAWN
POND
DRY WATERCOURSE
`REST IN THE GROVE'
There are two houses on this 2500m2 large plot, owned by one family. The need to drive paths from both gates to both houses, and to the common terrace in front of the basement causes a large amount of pavements, which cut the garden into small pieces. The garden lays on a steep slope, there's more, then 10m height difference between the two gates. These two problems are solved by a rich planting of herbaceous perennials and shrubs, which prevents having a view of the whole garden from one point, enlarges the garden, and makes maintenance easier on the slopes. Planting follows the dry sunny climate of this southern hillside. According to the wish of the client, who asked for different views to be seen while walking along the paths, there're sunny and shady parts of the garden, a pond, a lawn, a dry watercourse, a rest area in the "grove". When the trees grow large, the view to the lake Balaton will be opened in a more sophisticated way, then now, and they will also counterbalance the huge mass of the buildings. I was the designer and draftsman of this garden from the first sketches to the architectural details and the planting plan.
SAMPLE II.: URBAN DESIGN AND URBAN PLANNING
The Prímás island lies in the cove of the Danube, just beside the City of Esztergom, Hungary, a few hundred metres far from the main square. It's eastern bank is in front of the nice houses of the historic streets, by the silent branch of the river. From the western bank of the island the Danube Bend can be seen far, and the northern corner is guarded by the Coronation Cathedral on the top of the hill. The wonderful position predestinates the Prímás island to become in Esztergom what ,,Margit island" is for Budapest - a recreation area with promenades, coffee-shops. But it's destiny hasn't been fulfilled yet. The island, being the eastern abutment of the destroyed Mária Valéria bridge, shared in it's desolation since the II. World War. Weedy plots, ruinous buildings, untidy sports grounds behind concrete fences, dirty roads disfigures it. The ,,Large Danube Promenade" on the western bank is the drive-way of the bridge ¬ with no sidewalk! The potentials of the island has been discovered both by the investors and the city leaders during the last couple years, especially since the reconstruction of the bridge. The city proclaimed a design competition in 2008, which aimed the renewal of the island's riverside sector closest to the inner city. The problem is, that these revival efforts come into being without any unified conception or strategy. Seeing the result we may think, each idea is created for one single plot: a group of investors gets an area, tries to find out, what hasn't been built yet, then they look for an architect and obtain the building permission. The municipal authorities, operating among confused political circumstances, are happy to be able to show up a ,,result" for the public: ,,something happens finally". The fact, that this ,,result" is fairly chaotic from the aspect of both architecture and urbanism, the fact, that this ,,result" won't offer any public green space, promenade, or square for the citizen ¬ these are hidden yet for the uninitiated eyes. Unfortunately the phenomenon is not unique here and now, but in the neighbourhood of such an architectural heritage it strikes one's heart better then otherwise. Taking part in the above mentioned design competition with the architect Botond Dobos, we took the opportunity to explain our conception of this subject, and instead of designing one single line of facades, we created a layout plan for the part of the island, confined by the ,,Lépcsis" and the ,,Bottyán" bridges. The wide promenade along the branch of the Danube is followed by a perforated architectural fronting, reflecting the urbane milieu of the opposite bank. Restaurants, gallery, studio houses take place among the rebuilt school of music and the boathouse. Pathes drive through the gardens lying among the buildings to the inner part of the island, which keeping it's green and open-space character functions as the ,,Meadow of the City", being the recipient of open-air festivals. A new pedestrian bridge strengthens the links with the historic city. A walkway drives along the whole bank, around the island. The conception integrates the planned dyke, devising benefit from necessity.
SAMPLE III.: SKETCHES AND DETAIL DRAWINGS OF A PRIVATE RESIDENTAL GARDEN
This garden belongs to a newly built, large villa house in an old pine (Pinus nigra) forest, in the city of Pécs, Hungary. The building itself, reminiscent to Wright's Kaufmann House, contains several spacious terraces, hanging above the steep slopes of the site. As a result of these, there was no need, and no chance to create a `regular garden' here. The client and the architect asked for a pathway going around the site, and touching a few `attraction', enriching, but not throwing into the shade the natural beauty of the forest. Some of these are the `giants field', the `swings behind the wall', the `round glade', and the `pond with waterfall'. The first sketches of these can be seen above. The `pond with waterfall' lays in a hidden hollow of the slope, and follows the lie of the ground. The main terrace comes into sight at the last bend of the path. The waterfall comes down from the top of the supporting wall at the western side of the pond. The materials are plain reinforced concrete, wood, and broken verde serpentino pavement on the supporting walls. I was the designer and draftsman of this garden and the pond from the very first sketches to the last architectural details, and the planting plan. The collaboration of a structural engineer and a mechanical engineer was necessary for the ironing plan and the mechanics plan of the waterfall .
