Previous Employment & Experience
Sport is Life Ltd, Sandhurst
A gift company selling through the internet as well as catalog companies. My role while initially to work in dispatch soon grew to include the arranging and monitoring of logistics, including both international and domestic suppliers as well as dealing with customer complaints and queries. I also conducted market research for the company and carried out product reviews. I found my time at this company incredibly fulfilling and enjoyed the busy environment where deadlines had to be met.
Toll House Physiotherapy Clinic, Chipping Sodbury
I worked as a receptionist and administrative assistant at the Toll House Clinic which offers chiropractic and physiotherapy services. Here I learnt how to use several service specific databases as well as having to both over the phone and face to face organise appointments and consultations with patients. A large proportion of my time was also spent filing the medical files and treatment notes of patients as well as calling around hospitals and consultants to get x-rays and medical notes for injury specific treatments.
Acting as Groom and Au Pair
I have just finished working as a groom and au pair in Wiltshire. My duties included various activities such as house sitting while they were away, looking after their domestic animals as well as caring for and exercising the three horses and keeping the house. While the family was at home my duties extend to caring for the two children, ensuring they were entertained during the day and completed prep set by their school. I also cleaned and tidied the house and cooked meals. I found the work I did greatly improved my communication skills and my time management.
University Officer Training Corps
I took part in the University Officer Training Corps during my time at University. This organization aims to encourage leadership and self discipline while offering an insight and initial training within the Armed Forces. The discipline and physical challenges greatly improved my self confidence, team work and being appointed in charge of fire teams and sections really encouraged my leadership skills. It also instilled the importance of punctuality and smart personal presentation.
Holmes Place Health Club
I worked predominantly at the main reception although at times I also worked in the crche. On the main reception, duties included direct customer relations, cash handling, reconciliations and banking as well as regularly taking bookings for classes and gym instruction. We sold gym related equipment and clothing as well as membership to the club which worked on a commission basis. I was the first point of communication with customer complaints and on more than one occasion the emergency services. Having worked there for several months I was given the responsibility of securing the premises at closure, carrying out assessments on colleagues and training new staff in company procedures. During my time working at Holmes Place I learnt many skills including negotiation skills as well as learning how to diffuse tensioned situations, this also lead to an improvement in my independent decision making and my ability to work under pressure. At Holmes Place I also advanced my abilities in team work, flexibility and reliability.
The Chequers (Sanderson Pubs Ltd)
I was employed as a waitress and barmaid. Also during afternoon closing I helped with telesales and marketing for the company. Again this gave me a chance to improve my customer relations and phone manner. Working in the kitchens and in a serving environment was also a good chance to practice working in a high pressure environment.
Wellington Consulting Ltd
This is a business management consultancy. My employment included work on client sites and promoting services through presenting to business groups on behalf of the company. Other duties include helping with basic accounts and book-keeping, back office support, marketing activities, data input and reception work. Wellington Consulting aided me in being able to learn on the job, gaining interpersonal and communication skills. It also helped me greatly with presentational skills, giving me the opportunity to present to over 100 people at the Bracknell Chamber of Commerce and in other scenarios such as small meetings of around 5 people.
Middleton Equestrian Centre
Booking in clients for lessons and taking phone calls. Helping with adult and junior lessons and pony days including lead rein. Duties also included all aspects of care for the 30 or so horses and ponies on the yard and preparing for lessons. On several occasions I was asked to try out potential ponies for the riding school.
Voluntary Work
Residential Assistant
In charge of 70 fresher’s living in University halls ensuring they settle into university life during their first time away from home. This included being on call 24 hours a day, settling disputes and giving advice.
Fresher’s Volunteer.
During the first week at university helping new and returning students to settle in and find their way around, also encouraging students to integrate with fellow students and their flat mates.
Pre-Warrant Guide Leader
Assisting with both Guide and Rainbow packs including organizing events and camps. As part of this I have been CRB checked.
Personal Statement
Having graduated in War Studies from Wolverhampton University in September 2009 I am now looking for a position locally, now having moved permanently to South (contact details removed). In the year since graduating I have gotten married and had a son who is now seven months old. I am fortunate that my husband is able to do the majority of work from home leaving me in the fortunate position of being able to re-enter the work place without having to find childcare.
Outside work I enjoy horse riding, and have owned my own horses since childhood. For the previous three years I have been privileged enough to have been employed in a job in which a horse was provided. I took great pleasure in re-educating the former hunter culminating in achieving second place in a one day event in August 2009. Through my teenage years and up until recently I have had a series of horses and ponies on short term loan, along side my own, which have needed bringing on or schooling and have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge they have offered. I have also been lucky enough to have been bought several youngsters unhandled to break who are now out on loan.
While at university I was a member of the Birmingham University Officer Training Corps for three years during which time I learnt how to ski in Tignes and enjoyed the physical and mental challenge the BUOTC offered. Also through my experiences with the BUOTC I have developed my leadership skills further.
To keep fit I play squash, go swimming and enjoy walking. I also play as winger for Stafford Ladies Rugby team and have enjoyed the first half of the season very much. One of my greatest personal achievements has been to complete Tough Guy, a charity event consisting of a course of an 8 mile cross country run followed by a two mile assault course. It was a challenge but one which I truly relished and hope to complete again before too long.
